Listeria Cheese Recalls Hit Food City, Bashas, Yoke’s, Lipari

The recalls involve cheese made by Deutsch Käse Haus Cheese Factory in Indiana that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that causes food poisoning. No illnesses have been reported, but infections can be very serious or deadly.

Listeria can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths, although pregnant women may have no symptoms. One recent study suggests these “silent” infections could explain a lot of early miscarriages.

Researchers gave pregnant monkeys a dose of Listeria that was similar to what a person might be exposed to in food. The monkeys showed no obvious signs of infection, but all of them miscarried as soon as the bacteria reached the reproductive tract.

Lead researcher Ted Golos at the University of Wisconsin explained:

It’s striking that mom doesn’t get particularly ill from listeria infection, but it has a profound impact on the fetus. We’re hypothesizing that the maternal immune system’s attempt to clear the bacteria actually results in collateral damage to the placenta that then allows the bacteria to invade the fetus.”

The most important thing for consumers to do is check your refrigerator for recalled cheese products. Here is a list of cheese products that were pulled off the market in the last couple weeks:

On February 22, a recall was issued by Ready Pac Bistro for approximately 59,225 pounds of “Puro Picante Blazin Hot Chicken Salad” bowls with use-by dates between January 31 and March 4, 2017.

On February 24, another alert was issued for PREMO sandwich wraps (Ham & Cheddar, Italian Wrap, and Tuscan Chicken) with expiration date of February 12 and February 14, 2017.

Food City and Bashas’ supermarkets in Arizona also recalled 9 types of Colby cheese sold in the deli counter or meat departments under the store-brand label. The recall includes Colby Longhorn, Colby Jack, Colby Monterey, Colby, Co-Jack, Monterey Jack, and Pepper Jack.

On February 28, Yoke’s Fresh market recalled store-brand Colby Jack and Colby Longhorn cheese packaged in 16-oz plastic. The cheese was sold at Yoke’s grocery stores in Washington and Idaho.

On February 28, a recall was issued for Lipari Old Tyme and Copperwood cheese products in individual sizes and bulk sizes. They were sold by restaurants, grocery stores, and deli counters throughout Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Wisconsin and West Virginia.
